University
Toying with the idea of doing an Open University course. Will only say now it's in the field of the arts/social sciences.
Elsewhere I note people are getting ready to head off away to University for the first time. As most of my readers have been there and done that, and one can't seem to leave, can anyone recommend what an impressionable 17 year old Explorer Scout should be planning to take with them this September.
I will pass on your advice as appropriate.

A duvet. A camera. Some biscuits. As much food as they can persuade their parents to give them. Basic kitchen stuff (mug, plate, saucepan, kfs). Some books, maybe even related to their academic course. Tent. Sleeping bag. Walking boots. Posters and photos and pictures for their room.
A178 and AT272 are good - Leonardo DV and the Technology of Pre-Industrial cities. Both are short courses, and if you have the time and inclination both could be completed in a couple of weeks.

If there going somewhere vaguely flat (like Portsmouth) a bicycle, it is the student form of transport round these parts.
I'd say try to persuade their parentage to do the food shop when the car has been unpacked, then there is more room for food as well as that of the fresh and frozen kind.
Otherwise its the stuff Mad said (remembers mother having to post her bedding for 1st rally!)
I take it the student that just can't leave is Dr T. He claims he's going to find a 'proper' job at the end of this course, although that might be to pacify me!
