News Flooding In
Not wishing to do down people living in difficult circumstances, but is anyone watching the news getting the feeling that last weekends floods are not just the latest chapter in a story that's been going on for several weeks, but a whole new story that's eclipsed the previous one in terms of severity.
David Cameron has been criticised for keeping his appointment in Africa after visiting his constituency. Normally I enjoy him getting a little flack, but I get the impression from the coverage that people think the floods have only just happened, rather than only just reached his constituency.
This article seems to think my impressions of the differing treatment of the floods in the North and the South are accurate, and pleads that this is because of a slow news week.

I kind of agree on the basis that, even though we're in the thick of it, it's becoming a decidedly dull topic on the news.... you almost want the Beckhams to release a new perfume or something just for a bit of variety.
In all honesty though, I think some element of it is the sheer shock of 350,000 people having to collect water from bowsers for what may be two weeks, it worth a fair bit of coverage. It has such a dramatic effect on your daily life, such as you would never normally imagine. Spray on deodorant anyone????
Not quite my point, I was thinking more about how coverage of the mid-south floods could acknowledge the clean-up and recovery still going on in Humberside and South Yorkshire. Sort of "Meanwhile an earlier chapter in this story is still ongoing."
